Salma Akhter: A green city, green environment that is hard to imagine is now we belong to. Nature regain itself although we face a great threat like pandemic.
Last December COVID-19 first prevalence in China and epidemically spread all over the country. About 3,300 people died on Corona virus. Even this epidemic aberrate and spread all over the world. This epidemic declared as a pandemic on March11. The COVID-19 is affecting 199 countries and territories including Italy, Spain, Germany, France, UK, Iran, Pakistan, USA, India, Bangladesh.Total death due to COVID-19 till 29 March 2020 is about 31,983 all over the world.
The COVID-19 pandemic breakdown and getting more inexorable day by day. The Government of affected countries immediately lockdown the city, close the educational institutions, airports, vehicles, shops, factories, government and non-government institutions to reduce the spread of virus. But it is the massive shock to the global economy for both developed and developing countries.
At the end of everything, there is good news that the lockdown due to Coronavirus resultant the reduction of air pollutant like: Nitrogen dioxide (NO2)- a harmful greenhouse gas.
The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) observed that in the Northern Italy, the Nitrogen Dioxide concentration is decreased dramatically over last four to five weeks is about 10% per week. Nitrogen Dioxide is an unstable gas, so the variation is noticed clearly.
Air pollution in London has dropped by almost a third due to shut down of all industrial, traffic and airline activities.
China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment said that ‘the good air days’ in some Chinese city has increased 21.5% in February. Satellite image released by NASA and European Space Agency showed that the Nitrogen Dioxide concentration has rapidly decreased in some Chinese city that observed on January and February.
EarthSystem Professor Marshall Burke calculated that, the two months of cleaner air resulting from the coronavirus restrictions has saved the lives of between 1,400 and 4,000 children under 5, and 51,700 to 73,000 adults over 70 in China.
Now,The Air Quality Index(AQI) of Bangladesh is satisfactory. The PM2.5 concentration observed by U.S Embassy in Bangladesh at 27 March 2020 is 98 µg/m3, at 28 March 2020 is 157µg/m3,at 29 March 2020 is 152µg/m3. Pollution is in range may pose a Moderate to unhealthy state. But in before Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh ranks 2nd worst city in the world. The air quality index observed by Air-Now Department of state estimated that in 2019 is about 92 to 355µg/m3. The air pollution is mostly caused by CO2 emission from brick kilns. The Atmospheric condition also improves in Bangladesh. Nature is getting back its original form.It is said that dolphin is seen after twenty years in Cox’s Bazar, the longest sea beach in the world. The water quality of ocean has improved. It proves that if we want, we can remain our nature green and clean.
According to World Health Organization (WHO) about 4.2 million premature death are caused by air pollution. The air is polluted by harmful greenhouse gases like-Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Sulphur Dioxide, Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2). every year many people are affected by heart disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, and acute respiratory infections in children and aged.
It is measured in some state of China that action plan taken to control the air pollution have direct impact on GDP because the investment on health care system, morbidity due to air pollution decreases although minor investment on the action plan.
The investment in health service, can we reduce?Might it not a new gradient in our global economic activities?
We do not expect any pandemic and massive death but we can change our habit. If, At least one month in every yearwe locked down our activities like-industrial emission, factories, limited vehicles and airline transportation, we can able to reduce the total emission of air pollutants.
